Desde su aparición en 1976 ha habido seis generaciones distintas del Fiesta y se han vendido más de doce millones de unidades. Dentro de la gama de Ford, se ha colocado por encima del Ford Ka y por debajo del Ford Escort y el Ford Focus. El Fiesta es el único turismo de la gama europea de Ford que mantiene el nombre del modelo original de 1976, sin modificaciones. El modelo se vende en todo el mundo. En Estados Unidos y Canadá estuvo disponible entre 1978 y 1980, en 2010 volvió a dichos mercados importando unidades manufacturadas en la planta de Cuautitlán (México).
